project monochrome: reddish brown

After the basic white and black, what could possibly be next for my my minimal art project in brick form? Brown, of course! Or more specifically, reddish brown...

Progress in my Project Monochrome has been a bit sluggish of late for I wasn't able to actively hunt for spare minifigure parts. I still lack a piece or two to complete two to three working minifigures. But then I realized, I haven't shared with you guys my third one.

For the Reddish Brown Monochrome Minifigure, I did not use any Brasso or anything to erase any paint because I got every piece virginal plain. (Purists, rejoice!). Believe it or not, I got every blank piece in my local LEGO Store Build-a-Mini, with the exception of the head, which I just conveniently BrickLink-ed.

I don't know if I'm just too much of a food lover, but in my eyes the Reddish Brown Monochrome Minifigure looks good enough to eat. Doesn't it look like a piece of chocolate? Let's add a cowboy hat before anyone eats it.

It still looks edible!

I can't wait to finish the other minifigures. Hopefully soon, I'll find the pieces that I'm after...

project monochrome: black

Continuing my minimal art project in brick form, I have decided to go back to the basic black...

After my first White Monochrome Minifigure, I chose to follow it up with another basic color, black. Like white pieces, black pieces are also very easy to procure. I acquired all the black minifigure parts from my local LEGO Shop's Build-a-Mini. Unfortunately, there were no plain black head and torso pieces available, so I just selected the ones with the least printing. With the same process as before, I removed the paint using cotton swabs and a rag cloth with Brasso metal polish.

For its first interpretation, the Black Monochrome Minifigure is presented as a soldier. Why? The honest reason is that during the time of the shoot, the soldier hat is my only plain black piece. Besides, I think it looks super cute, like a shadow escapee from The Nutcracker.

Slowly, I'm collecting various extra pieces for my Project Monochrome (I find it hard to break a set for just a particular needed piece). I can't wait to execute what I have envisioned for this minimalist aspect of my brick fixation...

project monochrome: white

One of the purposes of the monochrome in art is to reduce it to its simplest form so that the focus of the piece would be on its pure physical elements. Applying that concept to LEGO, peeling away all the paint, leaving only the base color, one can achieve a minimal art in brick form...

That's one way to see it. Another is to simply say that I have always been a fan of monochrome minifigures, which are so cool and calming to look at. For the longest time, I thought this would be a difficult project but I have read somewhere that it's so easy if you start with the basics. That's why for my first monochrome minifigure, I decided to begin with the color white.

White pieces are very easy to obtain. I got all the white minifigure pieces from my local LEGO Shop's Build-a-Mini. Unfortunately, there was no plain torso available so I just chose the one with the least printing. The doctor's torso with a pocket and a stethoscope fits the description perfectly. I removed the paint using a cotton swab and a rag cloth with Brasso metal polish. With just a few rubs, all the paint is gone. I tried to do it as lightly as possible to avoid scratches or dullness. There were some reports of such results if the process was done aggressively. Luckily, I managed to produce a clean outcome on my first try.

With my Project Monochrome, I feel like I have added depth to my LEGO collection. The hunt is on to find single-colored pieces...
